Special Education
Coffee County Schools provides individual educational programs for students meeting the state criteria for special education. Intervention classes and speech (SLP) services are located at all district campuses. Comprehensive Development (CDC) also referred to as Highly Modified Instruction (HMI) classes are located at Deerfield Elementary, East Coffee Elementary, CCMS, and CCCHS.
Special Education staff include but are not limited to: speech-language pathologists (SLP), speech-language therapists (SLPA), school psychologists, occupational therapist (OT), physical therapist (PT), district coordinating teachers, and other contracted assessment/therapy specialists as needed by individual educational needs.
All students are served in their least restrictive environment (LRE), and served based on their individual needs.
Students that may require special services may begin receiving services from Coffee County Schools on their 3rd birthday. Children from birth to three, that require special services, may be served through Tennessee’s Early Intervention System (TEIS).

Tennessee’s Early Intervention System is a voluntary educational program for families with children, birth through age two, with disabilities or developmental delays as determined by state-level assessment criteria/guidelines.
All special education services are provided at no charge.
Notice of Destruction of Special Education Records
Under Federal Law, special education records, which have been collected by Coffee County Schools relating to identification, evaluation, educational placement, and provision of special education services, must be retained for a minimum of three years after special education services to the student have ended. However, Coffee County Schools retains these records indefinitely through a virtual platform beginning in the 2026sy.

Parents/Caregivers who suspect their child requires an evaluation to determine eligibility for Special Education services should contact the principal at the student’s home school or the Special Education Supervisor at 931-723-5156
If you are the parent/caregiver of a preschool child between the ages of 3 - 5 (not in K) and you have concerns about an area of your child’s development, you are encouraged to call to schedule a preschool screening for your child. Screening will include the areas of vision, hearing, fine motor, gross motor, speech/language, and cognitive functioning as needed. Please call: 931-723-5155 for next steps.
